Paper Dragon

A lantern from the 2011 lantern festival in St. John’s. Not really sure why I hadn’t poosted it earlier. I have a few pics from 2011 that really should be posted.

The Western Edge — Cox’s Cove, Newfoundland

Taken in Cox’s Cove, Newfoundland, Canada.

The bird in the second shot is not photoshopped; it’s a seagull with a good sense of composition. ;)

A lot of places in Newfoundland really do give the feeling of standing on the edge of the earth — maybe that’s why we thought it was flat for so long?

Insert Coin, Push in – (Signal Hill)

For some reason I really like taking photos of these rent-a-scopes left pointing wherever the last user chose.

Are the Capelin Rolling?

The annual Newfoundland spectacle of the capelin (tiny sardine-like fish) being hurled onto the beach by waves as they try to mate in the shallow water. Capelin are edible (according to some, I’ll pass) so people from all around try to jump out and catch them in nets before the water warms and the season is over.

A Faint Reminder — Bacon Cove South, Newfoundland

This upturned fishing boat serves as a faint reminder of how nearly every cove and inlet of Newfoundland, Canada was once a small fishing operation.

Shoe Cove and the Route 20-21 loop

A pretty little rocky beach along the East Coast Trail. Here’s a few more from my recent adventure around the Route 20-21 highway:

La Manche — A Bridge to the Past

This suspension bridge leads hikers across to the abandoned settlement of La Manche. All that remains of the community and its original bridge are a few concrete foundations.

The Sposa of Conception Harbour

Conception Harbour

Just one photo for today folks, but it’s a good one of a local Newfoundland relic. This is believed to be the Sposa, an abandoned whaler that sank after a massive storm in the 1960s.

Tors Cove — A classic Newfoundland coastline

This is the famous Red House in Tors Cove, NL. It is prominently displayed in the Newfoundland tourism commercials and once adorned the Newfoundland travel guide for Summer a few years ago.

Here’s a few more from my recent trip down to Tors Cove. It’s a great way to see a lot of varied Newfoundland scenery if you’re staying anywhere near St John’s and want to get out of the city.
